Missions Month May 2005

Sermons for Missions Month 2005 (more…)

At Calvary Chapel, we are a praying church. We intercede for the church, our city and our world throughout the week. We also have on-going prayer teams which pray with individuals for personal concerns and discernment. Also, we have periodic prayer training, to better equip the body for service.

CC office

The Elders Council is made up of the pastoral staff and up to six members of the congregation. The elders are responsible for the spiritual oversight of Calvary Chapel especially in terms of the prayerful discernment of God’s leading for the church and establishing goals and plans towards those ends. The elders are also responsible for handling financial matters, administering discipline, as well as teaching and exhorting the body.

Music

The purpose of the Music Ministry is to lead our congregation into authentic praise of God in which we worship “in spirit and truth” (that is, with both our hearts and heads, John 4:23). We believe that we were created “for the praise of [God's] glory” (Eph. 1:12), and that God is present by the Spirit when we gather as a holy temple (Ephesians 2:22).  The music team’s role begins musically and is aimed at making our worship service participative and responsive to God’s leading.

Ways to Be Involved in CC’s Music Ministry

Music Team - Typically people start by substituting, then later are placed on a team.
Sound Team – The sound team supports our worship services by setting up and controlling mics, monitors, and other sound equipment. Involves early arrival on Sunday commitment

Please talk to RICH SCLAFANI if you are interested in being part of a team

Intercessory Prayer

To intercede is to pray on behalf of another or others. When we look at the Bible, we see that Jesus Christ is an intercessor. In his earthly ministry, Jesus prayed for the many who came to him with needs, and perhaps the greatest example of intercession is his prayer for the disciples in John 17. But even more significant is the truth found in Hebrews 7:25, that after Jesus’ death and resurrection he became our great high priest who is “able to save completely” because “he always lives to intercede” for “those who come to God through him.” Because of Jesus’ “permanent priesthood” he is able to continuously offer his prayers to God the Father on our behalf.

One of the great privileges we have as Christians is to join with Christ in his intercession for others. The Bible is clear that our prayers are significant! God is a “prayer hearing God” (Jonathan Edwards) and He has created a world in which we are partners in the work of establishing His kingdom. In other words, God has chosen to work in this world through a partnership with us, who were created in his image in order to be his representatives and to have dominion. How do we partner with God? The number one answer is prayer. So we offer our prayers in faith, hope, and love — for God’s intervention in this world and for the establishment of the kingdom in the lives of others, our community, and our world.

But we are not alone in our intercession. God has also given us the promised Holy Spirit who “helps us in our weakness” (Romans 8:26). The Holy Spirit, like Jesus, “intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will” (8:27), and when we pray in the Spirit, God is able to give us direction in intercession because “the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God” (1 Cor. 2:10). As we participate in intercession, the Spirit reveals to us how God is already actively involved in the world and how we can join Him to accomplish His purposes. So we pray knowing that there is a strong spiritual reality hidden to the eyes of mortal men and women but opened through the power of His Spirit. We pray knowing that God hears and responds.

Gal 6:10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

CCHelps provides general assistance to the Calvary Chapel community by offering financial counseling, direct financial benevolence, and funding assistance for those seeking counseling. We review assistance requests and look for opportunities where we can “help” one another through sharing our gifts, time, and other resources. To evaluate requests we take into account their relevance, our relationship with the requestor, and the level of accountability.

We also have a database of information on resources and referrals from within our congregation. So, for those with specific needs ranging from referrals for counselors to borrowing ladders, CCHelps may be able to connect you with someone who can help.

Healing & Personal Prayer Ministry

All of us have experienced pain and wounding in our lives either as a result of our own choices or as a consquence of someone else’s actions (or lack of involvement with us). In the midst of our brokenness, God invites us into the healing presence of His Spirit and Truth, mediated through the minstry of other believers in prayer.

Believers at Calvary Chapel are invited to learn more about being a part of the Healing Prayer Ministry by receiving training designed to help encourage prayer that both reveals God’s heart as well as His truth to restore broken lives.

If you are interested in being prayed for by one of Calvary Chapel’s trained prayer pods, please contact the church office.

After Service Prayer

Sunday worship times are designed to provide an opportunity for each person to hear God’s Word and be transformed by His truth. We know by experience that God speaks to us through preaching and testimonies, and during times of worship, communion, fellowship and prayer. We are committed to providing space for each of these activities when we gather together.

One expression of this is the After-Service Prayer Team which is comprised of Elders and people who are already involved in the prayer ministry at Calvary Chapel. If you would like to be a part of this prayer team, please consider first joining with us in intercession or the healing prayer ministries.

TRANSFORMATION.GENERATION

TRANSFORMATION.GENERATION
THE STUDENT MINISTRY OF CALVARY CHAPEL SEATTLE

Jesus’ adolescence is summed up in one verse: “Jesus grew in wisdom [mentally] and stature [physically], and in favor with God [spiritually] and men [socially]” (Luke 2:52). TRANSFORMATION.GENERATION, seeks to help junior and senior high students do just that.

What does this look like? TG aims to partner with parents in teaching students about Jesus, helping them develop their personal relationship with Him, and preparing them to be mature members and future leaders of Christ’s Church. Students are a vital part of the body of Christ and have an important part to play in the Gospel of Jesus. Our hope is that by shaping today’s youth we build tomorrow’s culture—one that reflects the character and beauty of Jesus.

We meet weekly on both Sunday and Wednesday evenings and have a variety of monthly activities throughout the year as well!

For the World

Jesus teaches that we are to serve our community and the world. This is done through serving both people’s physical and spiritual needs. We are actively involved in our community and we help to send people outside our borders to serve. In one way or another, the people of Calvary Chapel support missionaries in Africa, Asia, Europe, South America and the United States. Two former pastors and several former members of Calvary Chapel are now international missionaries. We also support community outreach organizations such as New Horizons, a ministry to street kids in Seattle.

Missions Applications

Togo, Summer, 2001

Here are some pictures from our short-term trip to Togo in 2001.

Welcome to Calvary Chapel

The hospitality teams at Calvary Chapel wish to welcome you and help you feel at home as you worship with us. Our hospitality ministry is made up of three different branches: Greeters, Coffee Team and the Socials Team.

The greeters welcome you with a warm smile and friendly hello whether it’s your first time with us or your hundredth. If it’s your first time with us, stop by our Visitors Table and we would be happy to tell you more about our church and give you some written literature about us. We want to go Beyond the Bulletin. This means our greeters want to inform you not only of the day’s activities and orient new folks, but to make everyone feel welcomed, help you get situated and generally make sure things are running smoothly.

Our Coffee Team is a service ministry dedicated to creating opportunity for and enhancing the quality of fellowship and community at Calvary Chapel. Each Sunday after the worship service, everyone is invited to gather downstairs for food, fellowship, and fun. Our Coffee Team prepares and serves us fresh free trade coffee, pastries and an assortment of other snacks. Each week there are snacks appropriate for all ages even our youngest members. Please join us downstairs for this special time as we hope to strengthen our community spiritually and relationally.

Our Social Team is a new addition to our hospitality ministry. As we’ve grown together as a community we’ve realized our desire to gather together outside of Sunday service. So periodically throughout the year, we gather for a variety of activities including hosting movies, coordinating picnics, putting together talent shows, and celebrating Passover. Their contribution of providing a festive and attractive space, as well as good food, is wonderfully appreciated by all who attend.

We hope that you will find Calvary Chapel generous in hospitality!

Who Are We?

Regardless of where it meets, a church is a group of people growing closer to God while serving each other and reaching out to their community. God created us so that we might enter into a relationship of love with Him. It is a choice that we are freely given but that God realizes in us when we turn to him. His presence and power then turn our weaknesses into strengths, guide us through both the joys and tragedies of life, and allow us to overcome our self-centeredness and reach out in love to each other. But it is a process—a partnership with God, and He uses the church, this gathering, as a safe place to grow in understanding and in the practice of what He is teaching us.

Calvary Chapel is a pressure free environment where you can ask your questions about God and explore His presence. We are not a purposeless community. Jesus has called us to follow His lead, to become His apprentices. The gifts that God has promised do not come to us randomly or magically. Rather they are a direct result of giving our lives over to Jesus and allowing him the greatest place of authority in our lives.

We believe that program should never overwhelm relationship— either our relationships with each other and our relationship with God. Programs, and we do have them, are there to enhance relationship. If not, it’s time for something new.

We endeavor to be a community of healing, a place where people can meet God and grow in Him, a place where people can develop their gifts, and a place of love and service. We strive to abide in God’s love and forgiveness, follow where He leads us, love each other, and bear fruit in the world.

Core Groups

Every church needs structures to facilitate the life of the community. Our body is built around two main gathering places – our Sunday worship service and our weekly core group meetings.

Our core groups are small groups that meet in homes all over the Seattle area at different times of the week. Our experience tells us that this is an essential part of establishing friendships in the church as well as a key to growth in discipleship. For more on core groups, go to the “Ministries – Core Groups” section of our web site.
